5 Great Road Trips from Geneva, Switzerland

Switzerland’s second largest city is home to some great sights and attractions, and you’ll never find yourself short of things to do in vibrant Geneva. But with a great location near to the border with France and the stunning mountainous Alps region, it seems a shame to waste the opportunity to uncover some more of Europe’s gems and tick another country off your visited list.

Annecy, France

Just a 45 minute drive from Geneva and nestled in the mountains, the French town of Annecy makes a great day trip, and it’s worth driving there just to take in the incredible views along the A41. The town lies on the edge of Lake Annecy, and this particularly stunning area of the town is well worth a visit while you’re there. Follow the signs for the City Hall (Hotel de Ville) if you’re looking for the Old Town and the Lake, and you’ll find parking nearby.

Yvoire, France

Only around a 30 minute drive away from Geneva, the city of Yvoire can trace its roots back to medieval times and still retains many of its original features. Known as one of the most beautiful places of France, expect to see city walls, old cottages and picturesque restaurants.

Thonon les Bains, France

Just a little further up the road from Yvoire, you’ll find the beautiful marine at Thonon les Bains. Though the town itself isn’t particularly interesting, the old Chateaux de Ripaille is well worth a visit and the marina which lies on Lake Geneva is a real highlight. To reach the marina from the town, simply drive down the hill and follow the signs.

Chamonix, France

Chamonix hosted the very first Winter Olympics back in 1924 and this picturesque village is the gateway to the Alps and Europe’s highest peak – Mont Blanc!
